It means you are paying labour on lac and stones as well as on gold, and on a stone set piece the difference is large. The same 12 percent applied to gross weight valued at the gold rate adds about 43,200. Both are described as twelve percent and they differ by nearly twenty thousand rupees. Ask what the percentage is applied to, in those exact words, and get the answer written on the invoice. This is the single most useful question on this page for a Rajasthani buyer.

For a resident buying a set, the deep summer, when Rajasthan is at its hottest and both weddings and tourism fall away. Avoid Akha Teej and Gangaur entirely if price matters, since both are major Rajasthani buying occasions with no negotiating room, and avoid Dhanteras for the same reason. There is a distinction worth understanding here that catches people out: pilgrim peaks such as the Urs at the Dargah, or the Pushkar fair at Kartik Purnima, make the city crowded and expensive to visit but do not particularly firm the market for a bridal set, because that crowd is not buying one. This matters more in Rajasthan than almost anywhere because Jaipur is a global centre for cutting imported coloured stones, so the stones in a set bought here have often travelled further than the gold and pass through a far less transparent market.
