Gold Rate Today in Coimbatore

Live gold prices for Coimbatore and western Tamil Nadu, updated every business day.

Today's gold rate in Coimbatore for 24 karat, 22 karat, 18 karat and 14 karat gold is shown in the live table below, updated every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. Every figure is a bullion reference rate per gram for the metal alone and excludes making charges, wastage and GST. Multiply by 8 for a sovereign figure, which is the unit families here plan in.

One fact explains most of this page. Coimbatore is not primarily a place that sells gold jewellery, it is a place that makes it. The district holds thousands of workshops and tens of thousands of goldsmiths, and much of what they produce is sold by retailers in other states. That is why making charges here run around 5 to 12 percent against a far higher national norm, and it is also why a rising gold price is felt in this city as an employment question rather than only a shopping one. This page covers how the rate is set, why the labour is cheap and the metal is not, the Tamil buying calendar including why Aadi rewards buyers, wastage and stone deduction, commissioning your own piece, where to buy and sell, taxation, and a 15 question FAQ.

Today's Gold Rate in Tiruppur

Gold rates in Tiruppur track Coimbatore closely, since both price off the same Tamil Nadu reference and sit roughly 50 kilometres apart in the same Kongu belt. Tiruppur is India's knitwear and garment export centre, so like Coimbatore it is a manufacturing town where household gold frequently doubles as working capital for a business. Buyers there routinely travel into Coimbatore for a wedding purchase, because the Town Hall workshops offer depth of traditional design and making charges that a smaller market cannot match.Tiruppur are the same as Coimbatore — both fall under the same state jewellery association pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Coimbatore

What is the 22K gold rate in Coimbatore today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Coimbatore today is shown per gram in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. Multiply by 8 for a sovereign figure. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes making charges, the stone deduction and GST.

What is the 24K gold rate in Coimbatore today?

Today's 24 karat rate for Coimbatore appears in the live table above. At 99.9 percent purity it is used for coins and bars rather than jewellery, and in this district it is also the raw material the workshops buy and alloy down to 916 for manufacture.

Why is my jewellery bill higher than the gold rate shown?

The published rate covers gold value only. A Coimbatore bill adds making charges of roughly 5 to 12 percent, wastage where charged separately, GST at 3 percent, and a hallmarking fee. On a stone set piece a stone deduction should reduce the gold weight first. At standard making and no wastage, expect a final bill around 11 to 12 percent above bullion value.

Does the gold rate shown include GST?

No. The rates on this page are pre tax bullion reference rates. GST at 3 percent is applied at billing on the combined value of gold and making. Where you supply your own gold and pay only for the labour, that is job work and a different GST rate applies to the making charge, which is worth asking about since remake work is common here.

Why are making charges lower in Coimbatore than other cities?

Because the manufacturing is here. Coimbatore district holds thousands of jewellery workshops and tens of thousands of goldsmiths, producing for retailers across India. Labour is priced by competition between producers rather than by retailers marking up bought in stock, which is why charges run around 5 to 12 percent against a much higher national norm. It is structural, not promotional.

What is a sovereign and how does it relate to grams?

A sovereign is 8 grams, and it is the unit Tamil Nadu families use when planning a purchase. In Kerala and Karnataka the same weight is called a pavan. Northern and western India quote per 10 grams instead, so a sovereign figure compared against a 10 gram figure looks 20 percent cheaper before anything real has been compared. All rates on this page are per gram, so multiply by 8.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On temple jewellery the mark can be hard to find because the surfaces are heavily worked, so ask the seller to point it out rather than assuming it is absent.

Is gold cheaper in Coimbatore?

Gold jewellery is cheaper here. Gold is not. The metal rate in Coimbatore is ordinary, since the city is inland and prices off the same Tamil Nadu reference as Chennai. What is genuinely cheap is the making charge, because the manufacturing is local. So travelling here for a coin makes no sense, while travelling here for a heavy worked piece can save a great deal.

Where is the main gold market in Coimbatore?

The Town Hall area of the old city. Big Bazaar Street is the core, with hundreds of jewellers alongside the workshops that supply them. Oppanakara Street is the busiest retail corridor, and Raja Street and the surrounding lanes carry established family houses. Cross Cut Road, Gandhipuram and RS Puram hold the modern showrooms and national chains.

Can I get jewellery made to order in Coimbatore?

Yes, and it is frequently the cheapest way to buy here, because you are dealing with the maker rather than a retailer holding stock. That is unusual: in most Indian cities commissioning is a premium service. Agree the net gold weight, purity, making percentage, wastage, stone details and delivery date in writing before work starts, and require hallmarking before delivery.

What is wastage and should I be paying it?

Wastage accounts for metal genuinely lost while a piece is being worked, so some charge is legitimate. The problem is scale and disclosure. Where making is only 8 percent, a wastage line of 6 percent nearly doubles the labour cost while the headline figure still looks excellent. Ask for making and wastage as two separate percentages in writing. This is the most important check in the Coimbatore market.

When is the best time to buy gold in Coimbatore?

Aadi, roughly mid July to mid August. Tamil weddings are not held during that month, so bridal buying stops and jewellers discount to keep turnover moving. It is also the best commissioning window, because the workshops have capacity they lack before Diwali. Avoid the weeks before Diwali and Pongal, and note that workshop capacity tightens earlier than showroom crowds suggest.

Where can I sell or exchange gold in Coimbatore?

Get the pieces assayed at a BIS recognised centre first, then take quotes from more than one buyer, which on Big Bazaar Street means walking a hundred metres. Sellers generally do better here than in a purely retail market, because a workshop buying your old chain is buying raw material it will use this week rather than inventory it must ship to a refiner. Remaking old gold into something new is also worth considering.

What tax do I pay when I sell gold in Coimbatore?

Any gain is taxed as capital gains, calculated as sale proceeds less your cost of acquisition and expenses of sale. Whether it is short term or long term depends on the holding period applicable in the year of sale, and both threshold and rate have been revised in recent Finance Acts. If a piece has been remade, keep both the original invoice and the remake invoice, or establishing cost becomes guesswork. This is general information, not tax advice.

Does Lucira have a store in Coimbatore?

No. Lucira does not currently operate a store in Coimbatore or anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Our experience centres are in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR. Coimbatore customers can order online with certified pieces and a 15 day money back window. For 22 karat traditional work, temple jewellery or a commissioned wedding set, the Town Hall workshops will serve you better than we can and at a lower labour cost.
