Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Gwalior

What is the 22K gold rate in Gwalior today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Gwalior today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes making charges, wastage, GST and stone value. Here a tola means 10 grams, so the per 10 gram figure is directly usable.

What is a lac filled bangle and does it matter?

It matters more than anything else on this page. Lac is a natural resin used to fill bangles and hollow pieces, giving rigidity and heft without the cost of solid metal. It is legitimate, long established construction across this region and it means gross weight substantially overstates gold content. If a 20 gram bangle contains 14 grams of gold and 6 grams of lac, applying the rate to the full 20 grams overstates the metal by more than forty percent. Always ask for net gold weight stated separately on the invoice, and run your calculation on that figure.

How many grams is a tola in Gwalior?

Ten grams, following the modern central and northern convention, which is the same unit published rate tables use. Usefully, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan use the same, so a quote carried in from Agra, Jhansi or Dholpur describes the same weight. The trap is historical: the older tola was 11.6638 grams and still applies across Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Assam, and it appears on old family documents. That is roughly 17 percent more metal behind an identical word.

What should I do with the rabi harvest money?

Buy sealed certified coins rather than jewellery. Rabi money arrives in March and April, which is exactly when Akshaya Tritiya falls and the spring wedding season runs, so every farming household in the catchment has money in the same weeks and nothing is negotiable. A coin takes minutes to buy even at a crowded counter and fixes the metal at that day's price for a premium of a few percent. Then commission the jewellery in the monsoon, when goldsmiths have capacity and making charges are genuinely negotiable.

When is the best time to buy gold in Gwalior?

July to September, the monsoon. Counters are quiet, goldsmiths have capacity and making charges are at their most negotiable. The worst period is March to May, when rabi money, Akshaya Tritiya and the spring wedding season all land together. For a winter wedding, commission in the monsoon rather than in the rush. If Akshaya Tritiya matters to the family, buy a sealed coin on the day and commission the jewellery later.

Making charges are quoted per gram at one shop and as a percentage at another. How do I compare?

Divide the per gram figure by the gold rate per gram. At an illustrative 13,000 rupees per gram, 1,000 rupees per gram of making is roughly 7.7 percent. Both conventions are used here, so establish which a shop means before comparing. Ask separately whether wastage is a distinct line or folded into the making figure, because a quote of 12 percent plus 8 percent wastage is worse than 18 percent all inclusive.

Should I sell gold or pledge it in a bad season?

Pledge rather than sell where the need is temporary, and check the farm credit options first. A Kisan credit card or a cooperative crop loan is designed for input and seasonal needs and is frequently cheaper than pledging jewellery. If you have documented income, a provident fund advance or a loan against a deposit is cheaper still. If you do pledge, use a bank or an RBI regulated NBFC, never an informal lender, and note that a valuer lends against net gold weight rather than gross, so a reserve of filled bangles borrows less than the weight suggests.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. Do this at the counter before final payment rather than on the way home, particularly if you have travelled in from Morena, Bhind, Datia or Shivpuri. On a bridal set check every piece, since sets are frequently assembled from more than one source.

Is the gold in the Jai Vilas Palace real gold?

The great interiors are gilded, meaning surfaces are covered with gold leaf or gold paint over plaster, wood and stucco beneath. The gold is genuine and the quantity is tiny relative to the area covered, because gold can be beaten thinner than any other element. That is a fact about physics rather than about the Scindias, and even the wealthiest courts could not build in solid gold because there was never enough of it. The same principle applies to a gold plated bangle: gilded, plated, polished or rolled gold all mean a negligible quantity of metal, no hallmark and no bullion value.

Should I buy jewellery or coins?

Buy the jewellery the family will actually wear and give, and hold everything else in coins. A coin costs a premium of a few percent against a making charge that can reach twenty five, which on a 20 gram purchase means roughly four extra grams of gold for the same money. A coin also has no design, no wastage, no stones and no lac filling, so there is nothing to argue about, and a sealed coin pledges cleanly at a known purity where a filled and soldered bangle does not.

Should I travel to Agra or Delhi to buy gold?

Not for the rate, which is effectively identical. Travel only for selection or a materially better making charge on a large purchase, and weigh that against having a local relationship for exchanges and repairs over the decades a set will be held. The genuinely useful version is to get a quote from Agra or Delhi by phone before you negotiate here, and let the local shop know you have one. That proximity is unusual for a city this size and it keeps the sarafa competitive.

Why did my old set test below 916?

Usually solder rather than dishonesty. Traditional north Indian work carries considerable soldered assembly, and on pieces made before hallmarking was mandatory cadmium soldered KDM construction was common and is no longer BIS certified. On an old lac filled bangle a household can face both issues at once: solder pulling the measured purity down, and filling meaning the gross weight was never the gold weight. Both are legitimate and together they can make an exchange offer look far worse than expected. Have the pieces assayed in a quiet month so the position is known in advance.

When should I start a jeweller's savings scheme?

Check the maturity date against the calendar before you commit. An eleven month scheme started in the Akshaya Tritiya rush matures back into the same rush, which means redeeming at the least negotiable moment of the year. If you can choose when to start, choose so that maturity falls in the monsoon when making charges are softest. That small piece of arithmetic is worth more than the bonus on some schemes. Also confirm the redemption making charge in writing, and check the scheme is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

Is silver plated jewellery a precious metal holding?

No. Only solid silver has metal value, and silver plate on a base metal core does not. Heavy silver payal and vessels are a genuine holding in their own right and worth counting, but silver hallmarking is voluntary rather than mandatory, so ask for the fineness in writing and treat an unmarked piece as unverified. Silver is also worth a small fraction of gold per gram and swings harder, because roughly half its demand is industrial.

Does Lucira deliver to Gwalior?

Lucira has no store in Madhya Pradesh, so buying from us means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. Confirm we deliver insured to your pin code. For a farming household saving toward a wedding, our honest recommendation is coins from a local sarafa jeweller rather than anything we sell. For the regional bridal forms and for remaking filled pieces, the local trade will serve you better. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat daily wear pieces.
