Gold Rate in Kolkata Today

Live gold prices for Kolkata and West Bengal, updated every business day.

Today's gold rate in Kolkata for 24 karat, 22 karat, 18 karat and 14 karat gold is shown in the live table below, updated every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. Every figure is a bullion reference rate per gram for the metal alone and excludes majuri, wastage and GST.

Two things make buying gold in Kolkata different from anywhere else in India. The bhori, the traditional Bengali unit, is 11.66 grams rather than the 10 gram tola used elsewhere, so a bhori quote looks roughly 17 percent higher for the same metal and catches out anyone comparing across cities. And the value in this market sits in labour rather than weight: Bowbazar's karigars produce hand drawn filigree that machine casting cannot replicate, which is why Kolkata jewellery looks substantial while weighing very little. This page covers how the rate is set, the bhori arithmetic, purity and hallmark verification, a worked bill example priced per bhori, the split between Bowbazar retail and Burrabazar wholesale, the Bengali buying calendar built around Durga Puja, taxation, and a 47 question FAQ.

Today's Gold Rate in Howrah

Gold rates in Howrah are effectively identical to Kolkata, since the twin cities share one wholesale market across the river and most Howrah retailers source through Burrabazar. Differences come from individual jeweller majuri rather than the rate itself. Siliguri, Asansol and Durgapur also track Kolkata closely across West Bengal.Howrah are the same as Kolkata — both fall under the same state jewellery association pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Kolkata

What is the 22K gold rate in Kolkata today?

The 22 karat gold rate in Kolkata today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes majuri, wastage and GST. If a shop quotes you a bhori rate, divide by 11.66 before comparing.

What is the 24K gold rate in Kolkata today?

Today's 24 karat rate for Kolkata appears in the live table above. At 99.9 percent purity, 24 karat gold is used for coins and bars rather than jewellery, and it is traded wholesale through Burrabazar.

What is one bhori of gold in grams?

One bhori is 11.66 grams. It is the traditional Bengali unit and remains in everyday use in Kolkata jewellery shops. Note that this is not the same as the tola used elsewhere in India, which is 10 grams in modern trade. A bhori rate is therefore roughly 17 percent higher than a 10 gram rate for the same metal, purely because the unit is larger. Always convert to per gram before comparing quotes.

Why is my jewellery bill higher than the gold rate shown?

The published rate covers gold value only. A Kolkata jewellery bill adds majuri, which is the Bengali term for making charges and commonly runs 8 to 18 percent and higher on hand worked filigree, wastage where it is charged separately, GST at 3 percent, and a hallmarking fee per piece. Expect a final bill roughly 15 to 20 percent above bullion value at standard majuri.

Does the gold rate shown include GST?

No. The rates on this page are pre tax bullion reference rates. GST at 3 percent is applied at billing, in most retail invoices on the combined value of gold and majuri.

What is majuri and is it negotiable?

Majuri is the Bengali term for making charges, the labour component of a jewellery bill. It is billed either as a percentage of gold value or a fixed amount per gram, and in Kolkata it commonly runs from around 8 percent on machine made chains to 25 percent or more on hand worked filigree. It is the most negotiable line on any invoice, though genuine hand work earns its premium.

What is a wastage charge on gold jewellery?

Wastage is a charge intended to account for metal lost during manufacture, calculated as a percentage of gold weight. Some Kolkata jewellers bill it separately from majuri and others fold it in. You cannot compare two quotes until you know which convention each uses, so ask directly and get both lines shown separately on the estimate.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On open filigree there is little solid surface to stamp, so the mark can sit awkwardly. Ask the shop to point it out rather than accepting an unmarked piece.

Is gold cheaper in Kolkata than in other Indian cities?

Kolkata is a port city with direct import access and Burrabazar is one of India's deepest wholesale markets, so the local premium tends to be moderate rather than wide. But most apparent differences between Kolkata and another city are not rate differences at all, they are unit differences. A bhori is 11.66 grams and a tola elsewhere is 10. Convert both to per gram before concluding anything.

Where is the main gold market in Kolkata?

Bowbazar, on B.B. Ganguly Street, is the retail jewellery capital of eastern India and the place for authentic Bengali bridal work, with the workshops sitting directly behind the shops. Burrabazar nearby is the wholesale bullion quarter. Gariahat serves south Kolkata with branded and diamond retail, Hatibagan serves the north, and Salt Lake and New Town carry mall based showrooms.

What is filigree and why does it cost more to make?

Filigree is openwork built from hand drawn gold wire twisted and soldered into patterns. It is Kolkata's signature technique and it produces volume with very little metal, so a piece can look substantial while weighing a fraction of a solid equivalent. It costs more in majuri because it is entirely hand work, and machine casting has not been able to replicate it. You are paying for labour rather than gold, which is a genuine advantage if you want the look rather than the weight.

Where can I sell gold in Kolkata and get a fair price?

Get the pieces assayed at a BIS recognised centre first so you negotiate from a measured purity, then take quotes from more than one buyer. Options include the original jeweller if terms were published, organised buyback chains, and bullion dealers around Burrabazar who generally offer the tightest spread on plain gold. If you intend to buy new jewellery anyway, exchange almost always beats an outright sale.

Does filigree jewellery hold its value on resale?

The gold holds its value. The craftsmanship does not. Filigree is deliberately lightweight, so a visually impressive piece may contain relatively little metal, and on resale you are credited for that metal rather than for the hand work you paid majuri for. That is not a flaw in the technique, it is the trade off: you bought artistry, and artistry does not resell at a bullion counter. Buy filigree because you want to wear it, not as a store of value.

Which months are quietest for buying gold in Kolkata?

Poush, roughly mid December to mid January, and Bhadra, roughly mid August to mid September, are traditionally avoided for Bengali weddings, so demand falls away and showrooms are quiet. Chaitra, mid March to mid April, is also a low wedding month. These are the windows where artisan capacity is free and majuri on commissioned work is most negotiable.

Does Lucira have a store in Kolkata?

No. Lucira does not currently operate a store in Kolkata or anywhere in West Bengal. Our experience centres are in Mumbai at Borivali and Chembur, in Pune on Jangali Maharaj Road, and in Delhi NCR at Lajpat Nagar, Paschim Vihar and Noida Sector 18. Kolkata customers can order online, with certified pieces delivered and a 15 day money back window. For hand worked Bengali filigree, Bowbazar is where that craft lives and we would point you there.
