Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Madurai

What is the 22K gold rate in Madurai today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Madurai today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes value addition, wastage, GST and stone value. Note it is not the sovereign rate: a sovereign is 8 grams, so multiply the per gram figure by eight.

How many grams is one sovereign of gold?

Eight grams. A pavan in Kerala is the same weight. Published Indian rate tables quote per 10 grams, which is twenty five percent heavier, so the national figure will always look higher than what your jeweller quotes per sovereign. Neither is a better deal, they describe different weights. To convert, multiply the per gram rate by eight, or take eighty percent of the 10 gram figure. Twenty sovereigns is 160 grams.

What is value addition, and how does it differ from wastage?

Value addition, or VA, is the southern trade's term for making charges, quoted as a percentage of gold value and running from around 5 percent on plain items to 25 percent or more on heavily worked pieces. Wastage is metal notionally lost in fabrication. Some shops charge them as two separate lines and others fold wastage into a single higher VA figure. A quote of 12 percent VA plus 8 percent wastage is worse than 18 percent all inclusive, so always establish which convention applies before comparing anything.

When is the best time to buy gold in Madurai?

Aadi, Purattasi or Margazhi, the three Tamil months in which weddings are not held. Showrooms are quiet, goldsmiths have capacity and the VA is at its most negotiable. Aadi is the one the trade has formalised into a discount season. The worst time is the fortnight before a run of muhurtham dates, when the trade has no reason to negotiate at all. For a wedding in Thai or Panguni, commission during the preceding Aadi or Purattasi.

Are Aadi offers on gold genuine?

They are real and worth using, and they are also widely misread. An offer of zero making charges usually applies to a restricted range, most often plain machine made chains where the VA was low to begin with, and rarely to worked bridal pieces where the saving would be large. Ask three questions: what would the VA have been on this specific piece without the offer, is wastage still being charged, and does the offer cover commissioned work or only stock. If the answers are vague, the discount is on a number nobody will state.

How should I save for a wedding set?

Accumulate in coins, then commission the set once. An 8 gram coin is exactly one sovereign, so tracking against a target is straightforward, and a coin costs a premium of a few percent against a VA of up to 25 percent. The common alternative, buying a piece of jewellery each time savings build up, pays value addition repeatedly on metal that will be melted into a matched set anyway. On a twenty sovereign purchase that difference runs to several lakhs. Agree the coin exchange terms with the jeweller in writing before you start.

Is a jeweller's monthly savings scheme worth joining?

It depends almost entirely on one thing: what value addition applies at redemption. A bonus of one instalment in eleven is roughly nine percent, and in a market where VA runs from 5 to 25 percent a scheme that directs you toward higher VA pieces at redemption has taken the bonus back and more. Get the redemption VA in writing before joining, and check whether redemption is open to plain chains and coins or restricted to a catalogue. Also confirm the scheme is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On a bridal set this matters more than anywhere: a twenty sovereign set may run to fifteen or twenty separate items, each with its own HUID, and checking three of them is not verification. Do every piece, before final payment. Seeing 916 on a hoarding is not the same as checking it.

Is temple jewellery a good investment?

No, and it is not meant to be. Temple jewellery is a genuine craft tradition of this region and buying it because you want it and will wear it is an entirely good reason. But it carries a high value addition, a high proportion of stones and settings by weight, and often a lac or resin filling that adds gross weight without adding gold. On exchange it returns far less than its purchase price suggests. Buy it as something to wear, not as part of a sovereign target or as the household's savings.

Should I remake old family gold or sell it?

Remake it. You keep every gram and lose only the design, and the tax treatment strongly favours it. Supplying your own gold and paying only for labour is job work, which attracts 5 percent GST on the making charge rather than 3 percent on the entire value of a new piece. On a ten sovereign set that difference alone runs to tens of thousands of rupees. Have the old pieces assayed independently first, agree the making charge and wastage in writing, and insist on a job work invoice rather than a sale invoice.

How do I get the best value when exchanging old gold?

Have the pieces assayed independently before you go, since the shop's own assessment decides what you are credited and on a fifteen sovereign set a two percent difference is substantial. Then ask four questions and get the answers in writing before anything is melted: what purity are you assessing at and how was it measured, what percentage of the prevailing rate are you crediting and is any melting deduction applied, is the credit the same for cash as against a purchase, and is stone weight being deducted. Take the same pieces to a second shop first, which in this market costs an hour.

Why did my old set test below 916?

Usually solder rather than dishonesty. Traditional Tamil work carries a great deal of soldered joining. A kasu malai is built from many individually made units and an addigai from linked segments, so on older pieces made before mandatory hallmarking the solder can be a meaningful share of the whole. Cadmium soldered KDM gold is no longer BIS certified. The set can still be exchanged normally. Have it assayed independently so you know the figure before the shop's valuer tells you, and you can tell a genuine technical deduction from an unfair one.

Should I use a bank, an NBFC or a pawnbroker for a gold loan?

Match the lender to the size and duration rather than to the walking distance. A bank is usually cheapest but slower and needs more documentation. A regulated NBFC sits between, with disbursal often within the hour and RBI oversight. A licensed pawnbroker is fastest and most local but charges more, which hardly matters on a small sum for a few weeks and matters enormously on a large sum carried for a year. Avoid unlicensed lending entirely. Borrow well below the maximum loan to value, and redeem rather than roll the pledge year after year.

Who does wedding jewellery legally belong to?

Jewellery given to a bride, whether by her own family or the groom's, is her property in practice and generally in law. It is hers to keep, wear, pledge or dispose of, and it should not be pledged or exchanged without her explicit agreement. Record it in her name with item level invoices, and write down who gave which piece at the time of the wedding, because it is nearly impossible to reconstruct later. Separately, gifts given voluntarily are one thing, but demanding or accepting gold as a condition of marriage is a criminal offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Does Lucira have a store in Madurai?

No. Lucira has no store in Madurai or anywhere in Tamil Nadu, so buying from us means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. Our experience centres are in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR. For the thali, traditional Tamil bridal work, temple jewellery and anything counted in sovereigns, the local Madurai trade will serve you better than we will, and the competition on value addition there is genuine. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat contemporary pieces.
