Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Mangalore

What is the 22K gold rate in Mangalore today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Mangalore today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes value addition, wastage, GST and stone value. Note it is not the pavan rate: a pavan is 8 grams, so multiply the per gram figure by eight.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in Mangalore?

Less than the headline suggests, for four reasons. Once Indian customs duty is properly paid on arrival, most of the apparent gap closes. Gulf markets commonly sell 21 karat rather than 916, which is roughly four percent less gold. Imported jewellery carries no BIS hallmark or HUID, so it cannot be verified through the Indian system or sold on as certified 916. And making charges abroad are not always lower than a competitive Mangaluru shop will quote on plain pieces. Declare rather than risk it, and keep the receipt and customs documentation.

How many grams is one pavan of gold?

Eight grams. The same unit is used across Kerala and, under the name sovereign, in Tamil Nadu. Published Indian rate tables quote per 10 grams, which is twenty five percent heavier, so the national figure will always look higher than what your jeweller quotes per pavan. Neither is a better deal, they describe different weights. Multiply the per gram rate by eight, or take eighty percent of the 10 gram figure.

What is 21 karat gold and why does it matter here?

21 karat is 87.5 percent gold, roughly four percent less than 916. It is the standard grade in many Gulf markets, which means a great many households in this district hold it without realising it is a different grade from their locally bought jewellery. There is nothing wrong with it. It simply carries no Indian hallmark, cannot be verified in the BIS CARE app, and will be assayed and credited at its actual purity on exchange. Have imported pieces tested once and record the grade.

When is the best time to buy gold in Mangaluru?

The monsoon, roughly June to August. It rains here on a scale few Indian cities match, foot traffic drops, goldsmiths have capacity and value addition is at its most negotiable. Because this district follows three religious calendars, its peaks are spread across the year rather than concentrated, which actually leaves more quiet weeks available than in most cities. For a wedding in the following season, commissioning in the monsoon is the best timing decision available.

What is value addition, and how does it differ from wastage?

Value addition, or VA, is the southern trade's term for making charges, quoted as a percentage of gold value and running from around 6 percent on plain items to 25 percent or more on heavy worked pieces. Wastage is metal notionally lost in fabrication. Some shops charge them as two separate lines and others fold wastage into a single higher VA figure. A quote of 12 percent VA plus 8 percent wastage is worse than 18 percent all inclusive, so always establish which convention applies before comparing.

How should I convert Gulf remittances into gold?

Buy coins, and buy them in India. An 8 gram coin is exactly one pavan, so tracking against a wedding target is straightforward, and a coin costs a premium of a few percent against a VA of up to 25 percent. Buying locally means Indian hallmarking, weight stated in grams and no grade ambiguity. It also means whoever is in India can buy whenever a transfer arrives, without waiting for someone to be home on leave. Agree the coin exchange terms with the jeweller in writing before you start.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. Note that jewellery bought abroad will return nothing, because it was never in the Indian system. That does not mean it is fake, only that it cannot be verified this way, and an independent assay is the answer. On a bridal set, check every piece rather than a sample.

What should I do with a mixed household gold holding?

Consolidate it, and this is the most useful thing most families in this district could do. A typical household holds locally bought 916, imported 21 karat and older unhallmarked pieces in a mixture nobody has catalogued. Have it all assayed in one visit and record the grades. Then supply the pieces nobody wears to a jeweller under the job work route, paying 5 percent GST on labour rather than 3 percent on a whole new purchase. That converts uncertain mixed metal into hallmarked Indian pieces with HUIDs and a clean invoice. Keep genuinely fine old pieces intact.

Is it worth crossing into Kerala to buy gold?

Kasaragod is close and the Kerala market is deep, so it is a reasonable comparison for a large purchase. The pavan convention is shared, so quotes are directly comparable. But the metal rate will be effectively identical, so travel only for making charge or selection, never for the rate. Weigh it against having a local relationship for exchanges and repairs over the decades a set will be held.

Is a gold loan my cheapest borrowing option?

Often not, and this district is unusually well placed to check. A gold loan is fast and requires no income proof, which is why it suits households that cannot demonstrate income. Many households here can, and also hold deposits and long standing bank relationships. A loan against a deposit or a personal loan may be materially cheaper and puts nothing irreplaceable at risk. Ask your bank before you go to a gold loan counter. Where speed genuinely matters, a gold loan cleared promptly is exactly what a reserve is for.

Why did my old set test below 916?

Two possible reasons here. It may be imported 21 karat rather than 916, which is a genuinely different grade. Or it may be solder: traditional coastal work carries considerable soldered assembly, and on pieces made before hallmarking was mandatory that solder can pull the measured figure below the stated grade. Cadmium soldered KDM gold is no longer BIS certified. Have older pieces assayed independently so the figure is known before a valuer tells you.

How should I store gold in this humid coastal climate?

Gold itself is unaffected: it does not corrode or tarnish, which is much of why coastal families store value in it rather than in other metals. What suffers is everything around it. Silver components tarnish quickly here and should be kept separately. Pearls are damaged by both damp and harsh cleaning. And paper degrades, so invoices and certificates kept in a humid cupboard will not last decades. Photograph every document, keep a digital copy, and share it with family members abroad who may hold the purchase record.

Should I put remittances into gold or into a deposit?

That is the right question to be asking, and it deserves a real answer rather than a default. Gold protects value and satisfies wedding obligations but pays nothing and carries an entry cost. Deposits, funds and other instruments compound. This district has exceptional banking access, so both are genuinely available, and NRE or NRO accounts have their own rules worth understanding. Most households benefit from doing both deliberately rather than converting every transfer into jewellery by habit. Your bank can explain the options properly.

Does Lucira have a store in Mangaluru?

No. Lucira has no store in Mangaluru or anywhere in Karnataka, so buying from us means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. Our experience centres are in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR. For the Tuluva and coastal forms, and for this district's several community traditions, the local trade will serve you far better than we will. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat pieces, all BIS hallmarked to Indian standard with weights published in grams.
