Gold Rate in Mumbai Today

Live gold prices for Mumbai, updated every business day.

Today's gold rate in Mumbai for 24 karat, 22 karat, 18 karat and 14 karat gold is shown in the live table below, updated every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. Every figure is a bullion reference rate for the metal alone and excludes making charges, wastage and GST.

Mumbai is not a city that follows the national gold rate. It is where the national gold rate is set. MCX operates from here, the India Bullion and Jewellers Association is headquartered here, and Zaveri Bazaar is the largest gold market in India and the deepest wholesale trade in the country. When a jeweller elsewhere quotes a rate, they are quoting a number that originated in this market. That gives Mumbai the narrowest premium in India and, because the same city holds both a wholesale bazaar and a premium suburban retail belt, the widest making charge spread. This page covers how the rate is set, purity and hallmark verification, a worked bill example, where to buy and sell, the buying calendar, taxation and a 15 question FAQ.

Today's Gold Rate in Thane

Gold rates in Thane and Navi Mumbai are effectively identical to Mumbai, since the whole metropolitan region prices off the same market and most retailers source through the Zaveri Bazaar wholesale trade. Differences come from individual jeweller making charges rather than the rate itself. Both have substantial retail clusters of their own, and buyers frequently travel into Mumbai for wider selection on bridal purchases.Thane are the same as Mumbai — both fall under the same state jewellery association pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Mumbai

What is the 22K gold rate in Mumbai today?

The 22 karat gold rate in Mumbai today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes making charges, wastage and GST.

What is the 24K gold rate in Mumbai today?

Today's 24 karat rate for Mumbai appears in the live table above. At 99.9 percent purity it is used for coins and bars rather than jewellery, and it is traded through the wholesale bullion market around Zaveri Bazaar, which is the deepest in India.

Why do other Indian cities follow the Mumbai gold rate?

Because the benchmark is set here. MCX operates from Mumbai and the India Bullion and Jewellers Association is headquartered here, and between them they produce the reference figures the Indian trade prices from. Mumbai is also one of the principal points at which imported gold physically enters the country. When a jeweller in another city quotes a rate, they are quoting a number that originated in this market and then had a local premium added.

Is gold cheaper in Mumbai than in other Indian cities?

Usually marginally, yes. Mumbai is a port city with direct import access so there is no inland transport cost, the wholesale market is the deepest in India so the spread is tightest, and competitive density is extraordinary. Mumbai typically prints at or near the lowest end of the Indian range. But the difference is small, and it is dwarfed by the making charge variation within Mumbai itself.

Why is my jewellery bill higher than the gold rate shown?

The published rate covers gold value only. A bill adds making charges, wastage where charged separately, GST at 3 percent, a hallmarking fee per piece, and on stone set pieces the value of the stones. At standard making charges expect a final bill roughly 15 to 20 percent above bullion value, and considerably more on designer or handcrafted work.

Does the gold rate shown include GST?

No. The rates on this page are pre tax bullion reference rates. GST at 3 percent is applied at billing, in most retail invoices on the combined value of gold and making charges.

Why do making charges vary so much across Mumbai?

Because the same city contains a wholesale bazaar and a premium suburban retail market, and both are legitimate businesses serving different customers. The range runs from around 8 percent on machine made pieces in Zaveri Bazaar to 25 percent or more on designer work in a Bandra showroom. On 20 grams that spread is roughly 35,000 rupees for identical metal. Since the gold rate is effectively uniform across the city, making charges are the entire negotiation and taking three quotes is the single most valuable thing a Mumbai buyer can do.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On a multi piece bridal purchase check every item, because each carries its own HUID.

Where is the main gold market in Mumbai?

Zaveri Bazaar in the Kalbadevi area of South Mumbai, which is the largest gold market in India and has been trading for over two centuries. Bhuleshwar adjoins it with the workshops that supply the retail trade. Beyond the old city, Dadar serves the centre, Bandra and the western suburbs carry premium and branded showrooms, and Borivali, Andheri, Ghatkopar and Chembur anchor the large suburban retail belt where most of the city actually shops.

Should I buy 22K or 18K gold jewellery?

Buy 22 karat for plain gold and traditional pieces where gold content is the point. Buy 18 karat or 14 karat for diamond and gemstone jewellery, where the alloy must be hard enough to hold stones securely through daily wear. Mumbai serves both segments unusually well, so you are not compromising either way.

Do I need a certificate when buying a diamond in Mumbai?

Yes, and in this city there is no good reason to accept anything less. Mumbai organises India's diamond trade through the Bharat Diamond Bourse at Bandra Kurla Complex, which means jewellers here have direct access to certified stones at a depth other cities do not. Insist on a report from a recognised independent laboratory rather than an in house one, and check that treatment status is disclosed.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Mumbai?

If the purchase falls on one of the Saade Teen Muhurta or a wedding date, the date is fixed and rate timing is secondary. If it is discretionary, the monsoon months from June through early August are the clearest quiet window in the Mumbai year, when showrooms are empty and making charges are most negotiable. Because so many communities buy here, Mumbai has fewer genuinely quiet weeks than most Indian cities.

Where can I sell or exchange gold in Mumbai?

Mumbai is the best place in India to sell gold, because the market is deep and there are many buyers competing. Get the pieces assayed at a BIS recognised centre first, then take quotes from more than one buyer. Options include the original jeweller, established Zaveri Bazaar houses, bullion dealers in the wholesale market, and organised buyback chains across the suburbs. Note that you are credited for the metal, not the making charge. Lucira will value exchange gold at the counter at Borivali or Chembur.

What tax do I pay when I sell gold in Mumbai?

Any gain is taxed as capital gains, calculated as sale proceeds less your cost of acquisition and any expenses of sale. Whether it is short term or long term depends on the holding period applicable in the year of sale, and both the threshold and the rate have been revised in recent Finance Acts. If you hold several formats, note that physical gold, ETFs and sovereign gold bonds are taxed differently. This is general information, not tax advice.

Does Lucira have a store in Mumbai?

Yes, two. Sky City Mall on the Western Express Highway in Borivali East, and Central Avenue Road in Chembur. At either you can check the live rate, examine pieces in person, have existing gold valued at the counter and complete an Old Gold Exchange the same day at 105 percent of prevailing value. For heavy traditional bridal work at the finest making charges, Zaveri Bazaar is where the depth is and we would point you there.
