Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Mysore

What is the 22K gold rate in Mysore today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Mysore today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes value addition, wastage, GST and stone value. Note it is not the pavan rate: a pavan is 8 grams, so multiply the per gram figure by eight.

How many grams is one pavan of gold?

Eight grams. A sovereign in Tamil Nadu is the same weight. Published Indian rate tables quote per 10 grams, which is twenty five percent heavier, so the national figure will always look higher than what your jeweller quotes per pavan. Neither is a better deal, they describe different weights. To convert, multiply the per gram rate by eight, or take eighty percent of the 10 gram figure. Twenty pavans is 160 grams.

Should I buy gold during Dasara?

Buy a coin, not jewellery. Vijayadashami is genuinely auspicious and a great many households want to buy on it, but it is also the worst fortnight of the year to negotiate a making charge: the city is full of visitors, every counter is busy and nothing is open to discussion. A sealed certified coin satisfies the occasion, takes two minutes and costs a premium of a few percent. Then commission the jewellery in the quiet monsoon months, when the VA is negotiable.

What is value addition, and how does it differ from wastage?

Value addition, or VA, is the southern trade's term for making charges, quoted as a percentage of gold value and running from around 6 percent on plain items to 25 percent or more on kempu set temple work. Wastage is metal notionally lost in fabrication. Some shops charge them as two separate lines and others fold wastage into a single higher VA figure. A quote of 12 percent VA plus 8 percent wastage is worse than 18 percent all inclusive, so always establish which convention applies before comparing.

When is the best time to buy gold in Mysuru?

June to August, the monsoon months. Counters are quiet, goldsmiths have capacity and making charges are at their most negotiable. The worst weeks are Dasara and the Deepavali run that follows close behind, when the trade has visitors queuing and no reason to negotiate. For a winter wedding, commission in the monsoon rather than in the weeks before the date.

Why is my jomale so heavy but worth so little?

Because the beads are filled with lac. Jomale beads are hollow and lac filled to hold their shape, and a kokkethathi pendant commonly is too. That resin adds gross weight without adding a gram of gold. It is legitimate traditional construction rather than deception, but it means the gold rate must be applied to net gold weight stated separately in grams. Some Kodava pieces also have silver components dipped in gold, which is worth asking about separately.

How should I save for a wedding set?

Accumulate in coins, then commission the set once. An 8 gram coin is exactly one pavan, so tracking against a target is straightforward, and a coin costs a premium of a few percent against a VA of up to 25 percent. There is a pleasing precedent here: the kasina sara, one of Karnataka's signature bridal necklaces, is made of gold coins, because households once held gold that way and made jewellery from what they had. Agree the coin exchange terms with the jeweller in writing before you start.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On a bridal set this matters more than anywhere: a twenty pavan set may run to fifteen or twenty separate items, each with its own HUID, and checking three of them is not verification. Do every piece, before final payment.

Is kempu jewellery a good investment?

No, and it is not meant to be. Kempu temple work is a genuine tradition and buying it because you want it and will wear it is an entirely good reason. But it carries a high value addition and a high proportion of stone and setting weight, and stones and pearls return nothing on exchange. Buy it as ornament, not as part of a pavan savings target or as the household's reserve.

Is it worth going to Bengaluru to buy gold?

For a substantial wedding purchase it is worth comparing. Bengaluru is roughly 145 kilometres away with a deeper market and more competition, particularly on certified diamond jewellery and contemporary design. The metal rate will be effectively identical, so travel for the making charge and the selection, not the rate. Weigh against it the value of a local relationship for resizes, repairs and exchanges, and the fact that Mysuru's own trade knows the traditional Kannadiga and Kodava forms well.

Should I remake old family gold or sell it?

Remake it, if the piece is plain or in a form nobody will wear. You keep every gram and lose only the design, and the tax treatment strongly favours it: supplying your own gold and paying only for labour is job work, attracting 5 percent GST on the making charge rather than 3 percent on the entire value. On a ten pavan set that difference alone runs to tens of thousands of rupees. But get an intact kempu set or a well made kokkethathi valued as an object first, since stones, pearls and lac are lost entirely in melting.

Why did my old set test below 916?

Usually solder rather than dishonesty. Traditional Kannadiga work carries a great deal of soldered assembly: a kasina sara is built from many individually made coin units, an entele sara from layered chains, a mavinakayi addige from dozens of motifs. On older pieces made before mandatory hallmarking that solder can be a meaningful share of the whole, and cadmium soldered KDM gold is no longer BIS certified. Have older pieces assayed independently so the figure is known before the shop's valuer tells you.

How do I get the best value when exchanging old gold?

Have the pieces assayed independently before you go, since the shop's own assessment decides what you are credited. Then ask five questions and get the answers in writing before anything is melted: what purity are you assessing at and how was it measured, what percentage of the prevailing rate are you crediting, is any melting deduction applied, how are lac filling and stones being deducted, and are any silver components valued separately. Take the same pieces to a second shop first, which in this market costs an hour.

Does Mysore silk really contain gold?

Yes. Mysore silk was established under the patronage of the Maharaja of Mysore and is woven from pure silk with genuine gold zari thread, with each saree carrying a code certifying its authenticity. That is unusual: a great deal of zari sold elsewhere is metallised or gilded substitute rather than drawn gold. Where a saree is described as having real zari, the certification is what establishes it, exactly as a hallmark does for jewellery.

Does Lucira have a store in Mysuru?

No. Lucira has no store in Mysuru or anywhere in Karnataka, so buying from us means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. Our experience centres are in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR. For a kasina sara, a mavinakayi addige, a kokkethathi, kempu work or anything counted in pavans, the local Mysuru trade will serve you far better than we will. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat contemporary pieces.
