Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Pune

What is the 22K gold rate in Pune today?

The 22 karat gold rate in Pune today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes making charges, wastage and GST.

What is the 24K gold rate in Pune today?

Today's 24 karat rate for Pune appears in the live table above. At 99.9 percent purity, 24 karat gold is used for coins and bars rather than jewellery, because pure gold is too soft to hold a clasp or a setting.

Why is my jewellery bill higher than the gold rate shown?

The published rate covers gold value only. A Pune bill adds making charges, commonly 8 to 14 percent and up to 20 percent on hand worked traditional pieces, wastage where charged separately, GST at 3 percent, and a hallmarking fee per piece. Expect a final bill roughly 14 to 18 percent above bullion value at standard making charges.

Does the gold rate shown include GST?

No. The rates on this page are pre tax bullion reference rates. GST at 3 percent is applied at billing, in most retail invoices on the combined value of gold and making charges.

What are making charges in Pune and are they negotiable?

Making charges cover the labour of turning metal into a finished piece, billed either as a percentage of gold value or a fixed amount per gram. In Pune they run from around 8 percent on machine made chains to 20 percent on hand worked Kolhapuri Saaj and thushi. Because the gold rate is standardised across the city, making charges are effectively the entire negotiation, and they are negotiable.

Why does a thushi or Kolhapuri Saaj cost more to make?

Both are built by hand. A thushi is hundreds of tiny gold beads granulated and packed tight around a strung base. A Kolhapuri Saaj is assembled from individually formed leaf motifs linked together. Neither can be produced by machine casting, so the making charge reflects genuine skilled labour rather than a markup. The question worth asking in any Pune showroom is simply whether a piece is hand worked, because that is what justifies the premium.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity. On granulated work the mark may sit on a clasp rather than the body of the piece, so ask the jeweller to point it out. On a multi piece wedding set, check every item.

Is gold cheaper in Pune or Mumbai?

Pune typically prints marginally above Mumbai, because it sits inland around 150 kilometres away and sources much of its metal through the Mumbai trade, which adds a small transport and handling cost. Lower retail overheads here partly offset that, so the net difference is small. It is far smaller than the making charge spread between two Laxmi Road shops, which is where your attention is better spent.

Are gold rates the same across Maharashtra?

Very close. Maharashtra's jewellery and bullion associations publish a local rate reference that most retailers price from, so rates across Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur and the rest of the state track each other closely. Differences come from individual jeweller making charges rather than from the underlying rate.

Should I buy 22K or 18K gold jewellery?

Buy 22 karat for traditional Maharashtrian work: thushi, Kolhapuri Saaj, nath and chinchpeti all need the malleability of 916 for their granulated and beaded construction. Buy 18 karat or 14 karat for diamond and gemstone jewellery, where the alloy must be hard enough to hold stones securely through daily wear.

Where is the main gold market in Pune?

Laxmi Road, and specifically the Saraf Bazaar stretch, is the traditional heart of the trade and where authentic Maharashtrian work is made and sold. Tulshibaug sits immediately alongside. Jangali Maharaj Road and Fergusson College Road carry modern showrooms, Camp and MG Road the older cantonment retail, and Koregaon Park, Aundh, Baner, Kothrud and the Pimpri Chinchwad belt serve their own neighbourhoods.

What are the Saade Teen Muhurta?

Maharashtrian tradition holds that there are three and a half supremely auspicious days in the year, on which anything begun is considered certain to prosper and no separate muhurta calculation is needed. They are Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussehra, and Diwali Padwa as the half. Gold buying concentrates heavily on these days, showrooms are crowded and making charges are least flexible.

Is it a good time to buy gold in Pune?

If the purchase falls on one of the Saade Teen Muhurta or a wedding date, the date is fixed and rate timing is secondary. If it is discretionary, the stretch after the wedding season ends and before Gudi Padwa is quietest, with artisan capacity free and making charges genuinely negotiable. Commission hand worked pieces months ahead of the Ganpati and Diwali run rather than weeks.

Where can I sell or exchange gold in Pune?

Get the pieces assayed at a BIS recognised centre first so you negotiate from a measured purity, then take quotes from more than one buyer. Options include the original jeweller, established Laxmi Road houses, and organised buyback chains across the suburbs. Note that you are credited for the metal, not the craftsmanship, so a hand worked piece does not recover the making charge you paid. Lucira will value exchange gold at the counter on Jangali Maharaj Road.

Does Lucira have a store in Pune?

Yes. Our experience centre is at Sai Square on Jangali Maharaj Road. You can check the live rate, examine pieces in person, have existing gold valued at the counter and complete an Old Gold Exchange the same day at 105 percent of prevailing value. For hand worked Maharashtrian pieces such as a thushi or Kolhapuri Saaj, Laxmi Road is where that craft lives and we would point you there.
