Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Thanjavur

What is the 22K gold rate in Thanjavur today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Thanjavur today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes value addition, wastage, GST and stone value. Note it is not the sovereign rate: a sovereign is 8 grams, so multiply the per gram figure by eight.

Does a panchaloha bronze contain gold?

Yes, and in a quantity so small it has no bearing on value. Panchaloha means five metals, and the alloy used for Chola style icons cast at Swamimalai is dominated by copper, with gold and silver traditionally included in symbolic proportions that vary between foundries. So a panchaloha icon genuinely contains gold and is in no sense a gold object. Buy one as the remarkable piece of craft it is, and do not let anyone price one as though the gold content mattered or count one toward a household's precious metal holding.

How many grams is one sovereign of gold?

Eight grams. The same weight is called a pavan in Kerala and Karnataka. Published Indian rate tables quote per 10 grams, which is twenty five percent heavier, so the national figure will always look higher than what your jeweller quotes per sovereign. Neither is a better deal, they describe different weights. Multiply the per gram rate by eight, or take eighty percent of the 10 gram figure. The sovereign is the lightest of the common Indian units, so a Tamil quote will almost always look cheaper than one from elsewhere. It is not cheaper. It is less metal.

How much does one sovereign actually cost?

Eight grams of metal at today's 22 karat rate, plus value addition of anywhere from 8 to 25 percent, plus 3 percent GST. At an illustrative 13,000 rupees per gram on standard work that comes to roughly 1,20,000 rupees per sovereign. That single number is the most useful thing a family can know before agreeing a wedding count, and almost nobody works it out in advance. Section 49 gives the full working.

When is the best time to buy gold in Thanjavur?

Aadi, and this is Tamil Nadu's genuine peculiarity. Weddings are avoided in that month so workshops go quiet and the trade runs discount offers. For a wedding later in the year, commissioning in Aadi combines the best availability with the most negotiable value addition. Read the offers carefully though: a discount on value addition is worth having, while one described on the total or restricted to selected stock may be worth much less. Compare against a plain VA quote elsewhere rather than the shop's own before figure.

Does a Thanjavur painting contain real gold?

A genuine one uses real 24 karat gold leaf, and gold leaf is astonishingly thin. Gold is the most malleable metal known and a single gram can be beaten to cover close to half a square metre, so even a substantial painting carries a tiny quantity of metal. Ask whether a piece uses genuine leaf or a gold coloured substitute, since both are sold and the price difference is legitimate. Then buy it as art. The gold is a material choice, not an investment.

What is value addition, and how does it differ from wastage?

Value addition, or VA, is the southern trade's term for making charges, quoted as a percentage of gold value and running from around 8 percent on plain items to 25 percent or more on heavy temple style work. Wastage is metal notionally lost in fabrication. Some shops charge them as two separate lines and others fold wastage into a single higher VA figure. A quote of 12 percent VA plus 8 percent wastage is worse than 18 percent all inclusive, so always establish which convention applies before comparing.

How should I save toward a wedding sovereign count?

Buy 8 gram coins, because each one is exactly one sovereign. You are then building the count rather than hoping to afford it later, and you can count coins instead of tracking a rupee balance. Then supply the accumulated coins to have the set made under the job work route, paying value addition once on labour rather than on the metal each time. Agree the coin exchange terms with the jeweller in writing before you start.

Is a sovereign gold bond measured in sovereigns?

No, and the collision of terms catches people out regularly in this state. Sovereign there means issued by the government, and the bonds are denominated in grams rather than in the 8 gram sovereign. They pay fixed interest on top of tracking the gold price and have historically carried favourable tax treatment on redemption at maturity. Their limitation is that they cannot be worn at a muhurtham or pledged when a harvest fails, so they sit on top of a physical holding rather than instead of it.

Should I join a jeweller's savings scheme?

They are run at greater scale in Tamil Nadu than anywhere, and they can work well, but ask one structural question first. In some schemes each instalment buys gold at that month's rate, so you accumulate weight. In others you accumulate rupees and buy at the rate prevailing at redemption. For a household working toward a sovereign count, the first kind is what you want. Also confirm the redemption value addition in writing, since a high one erases the bonus, and check the scheme is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

Should I count temple jewellery toward my sovereign total?

Count it separately, not toward the reserve. Temple style stone set work is among the most beautiful traditions in the south and it is among the least efficient ways to hold metal. Kempu and other stones return nothing on exchange, the value addition sits at the top of the range, and net gold weight can be a modest share of what the piece appears to be. Buy it because you want it, and keep the household's actual gold count in plain pieces and coins where the weight is unambiguous.

Why did my old set test below 916?

Usually solder rather than dishonesty. Traditional Tamil work carries considerable soldered assembly, and a kasu malai of individually made coin units or a temple style necklace of many joined components has a high proportion of solder. On pieces made before hallmarking was mandatory, cadmium soldered KDM construction was common and is no longer BIS certified. Combined with stone weight this means a family believing it holds twelve sovereigns may hold effectively fewer. Have older pieces assayed in a quiet month so the number is known before a pledge counter tells you.

Should I sell gold or pledge it in a bad season?

Pledge rather than sell where the need is temporary, and check the farm credit options first. A Kisan credit card or a cooperative crop loan is designed for seasonal needs and is frequently cheaper. Tamil Nadu has an unusually dense gold loan industry, which is convenient and is also the risk: where disbursal takes an hour, pledging becomes the default rather than the considered option. Use a bank or a regulated NBFC, never an informal lender, and clear the pledge rather than rolling it season after season.

Can I reduce the sovereign count we agreed?

That is a family conversation rather than a jewellery question, but two facts are worth having. Because a count is a number rather than a budget, it does not fall when the gold price rises, so a count that was demanding twenty years ago is considerably more demanding now without anyone having raised it. And demanding gold as a condition of marriage is a criminal offence in India under the Dowry Prohibition Act. A smaller count met from what the household has genuinely accumulated is a better outcome than a larger one funded by borrowing.

Does Lucira deliver to Thanjavur?

Lucira has no store in Thanjavur or anywhere in Tamil Nadu, so buying from us means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. Confirm we deliver to your pin code and that delivery is insured. For the wedding count and the Tamil bridal forms, buy locally: the trade here is among the strongest in India and understands the count in a way we do not. For a Swamimalai bronze or a Thanjavur painting, buy from the artisans. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat daily wear pieces.
