Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Rate in Udaipur

What is the 22K gold rate in Udaipur today?

The 22 karat, or 916, gold rate in Udaipur today is shown per gram and per 10 grams in the live table at the top of this page, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks. 916 refers to 91.6 percent purity. It is a bullion reference rate and excludes making charges, wastage, GST and stone value. Here a tola means 10 grams, so the per 10 gram figure is directly usable.

Is thewa jewellery a good way to hold gold?

No, and it is not meant to be. Thewa, from nearby Pratapgarh, fuses finely worked near pure gold sheet onto coloured glass. The gold is completely genuine, and the total piece is mostly glass and setting, with the gold sheet a small fraction of the weight. A thewa pendant is a serious piece of craft, correctly priced for the skill involved, but it is not a way of holding bullion. Buy it because you want the craft, not as a household reserve, and ask for the actual gold weight in grams if you want to know the metal content.

How do I know if meenakari jewellery has real gold in it?

Ask what the base metal is, in writing, before you buy. Meenakari enamel is applied over engraved metal, and fine enamel over gold is genuine jewellery with real value beneath the colour, while the same enamel over silver or a base alloy is decorative work with little or no precious metal value. The two can look extremely similar to an untrained eye, so the question has to be asked directly rather than assumed from appearance.

How many grams is a tola in Udaipur?

Ten grams, following the modern Rajasthani and northern convention, which is the same unit published rate tables use. The trap is historical rather than geographical: the older tola was 11.6638 grams and still applies across Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Assam, and it appears on old family documents. That is roughly 17 percent more metal behind an identical word.

When is the best time to buy gold in Udaipur?

July to September, the monsoon, when goldsmiths across the city have capacity and making charges are most negotiable. Avoid commissioning jewellery around Gangaur or Akshaya Tritiya in March to May, when demand from farming, tourism and Gangaur gifting all land together and the trade has no reason to negotiate. If the exact timing depends on when your own income arrives, whether that is a harvest, a salary or a tourist season, buy coins the day the money is available and commission jewellery separately in the quieter months.

Making charges are quoted per gram at one shop and as a percentage at another. How do I compare?

Divide the per gram figure by the gold rate per gram. At an illustrative 13,000 rupees per gram, 1,000 rupees per gram of making is roughly 7.7 percent. Both conventions are used here, so establish which a shop means before comparing. Ask separately whether wastage is a distinct line or folded into the making figure.

Should I take a gold loan or a Kisan credit card?

It depends which of Udaipur's local economies your household belongs to. A farming household should check a Kisan credit card or cooperative crop loan first, since it is usually cheaper than pledging jewellery. A mining sector household with a salary should check a provident fund advance or loan against deposit first. A tourism or hospitality household with seasonal, less formally documented income may genuinely find a regulated gold loan the most practical route, since it requires no income proof, provided it is cleared once the season's earnings arrive rather than rolled over.

How do I verify that gold is genuinely hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, a purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character HUID. Enter the HUID in the BIS CARE app to confirm the registered jeweller and certified purity, at the counter before final payment. Note that thewa work, meenakari over base metal and tourist trinkets fall outside the hallmarking system entirely, so the absence of a HUID on those items means nothing about whether they are genuine. On a bridal set check every piece, since sets are frequently assembled from more than one source.

Does Udaipur mine its own gold?

No. The Aravalli belt around Udaipur, anchored by the ancient smelting site at Zawar, is one of India's most significant sources of zinc, lead and silver, and the region has a genuinely deep metallurgical history. But none of that output is gold. Despite the mineral wealth, essentially no commercial gold is mined here, and every gram sold in the city is imported and refined elsewhere before it reaches a counter in Udaipur.

Should I buy jewellery or coins?

Buy the jewellery the family will actually wear and give, buy a thewa or meenakari piece only if you genuinely want the craft, and hold everything else in coins. A coin costs a premium of a few percent against a making charge that can reach twenty five, which on a 20 gram purchase means roughly four extra grams of gold for the same money. A coin also pledges cleanly at a known purity, which a craft or decorative piece does not.

Is gold coloured jewellery sold to tourists actually gold?

Usually not. Udaipur is one of India's most visited cities, and a great deal of gold coloured jewellery sold in tourist areas is plated or costume metal with no bullion value. For actual gold, buy from a registered jeweller with a HUID and a GST invoice, not from a stall aimed at visitors, and apply the same verification standards there as anywhere else.

Why did my old family set test below 916?

Usually solder rather than dishonesty. Traditional Rajputi work carries considerable soldered assembly, and on pieces made before hallmarking was mandatory cadmium soldered KDM construction was common and is no longer BIS certified. Such pieces can measure below their stated grade for purely technical reasons. Have the pieces assayed independently in a quiet month, before offering them in exchange or at a pledge counter, so the figure is known before the conversation starts.

Can I pledge a thewa piece for a gold loan?

You can, but do not expect much. A lender values net gold weight, not the craft, and will assess a thewa or fine meenakari piece at the value of the small amount of actual gold in it rather than at what you paid for the workmanship. It will pledge for a fraction of its purchase price. For a household reserve intended to be pledged in a bad season, sealed coins are a far more efficient format than any craft purchase.

Is Bhil and Garasia jewellery gold?

Generally no, it is silver. The hill districts around Udaipur are home to Bhil and Garasia communities with their own substantial silver ornament traditions, worn in heavy quantity rather than gold. This is a genuine and separate craft economy from Rajputi bridal gold, worth respecting on its own terms. Silver hallmarking is voluntary rather than mandatory, so ask for the fineness in writing and treat an unmarked piece as unverified.

Does Lucira have a store in Udaipur?

No, Lucira has no store in Rajasthan. Buying from us here means ordering online with a 15 day money back window. For thewa, buy from Pratapgarh or a Udaipur dealer with a genuine workshop relationship, since we do not make it. For Rajputi bridal forms and meenakari, the local trade will serve you better too. Where we compete is certified lab grown diamond jewellery and lighter 18 karat daily wear pieces, and our published gram pricing is a useful independent reference in a market where tourist and resident pricing can differ.
